Addresal of Issues in the slums..
Alcohol consumption and violence are a huge challenge in the slums. This has given rise to security issues, creating extreme situations where young girls are not even secure in the presence of their fathers/ relatives. The issues are also rampant as there is a huge gap of social net and cohesiveness amongst the communities. Looking at these dire needs, Urban cell identified 35 members from the sangathan, who are trained as para legals.
This is being done in collaboration with socio legal knowledge cell of KMVS. The cadre thus trained have been very active and have already helped 54 women to avail services of “Hello sakhi”, thereby ensuring the counseling and legal support to the women.
Another initiative was in addressing the health issues, Urban cell tied up with Rotray club and arranged for carrying blood tests of Sakhi sangini members. it showed that more than half of the women had hameglobin levels between 6-8 mgs., which shows that they are severly anemic.
moving towards governance:
while carrying out the housing programme as well as in linking with the government schemes, it is apparent that the sangathan would have to address governance issues by ensuring effective implementation of 74th amendment and area sabhas defined under it. the cell looks to work towards it.
moreover, it is also decided that all the members would be linked with LIC Janshree bima yojna for securing their lives and medicinal expenses.
